Birth cohort studies
Birth cohort studies provide one of the most powerful research methods for medical and social research. Robust data collection charting the growth and development of children, from in utero through to adulthood, can be used to determine the causes of common childhood illnesses and explore the mental and social development of a new generation. This form of study can help to unravel the complex interactions between genes, lifestyle factors and the environment.
Birth cohort studies provide a valuable research platform for investigating today's major research questions and evaluating how health and well-being can be improved.
Born in Bradford cohort
Bradford is the fifth largest metropolitan area in the UK and home to the eighth most deprived health community. Around 50% of 6,000 babies born in the city each year are of South Asian origin. Funding has been obtained to establish a unique multi-ethnic birth cohort study in Bradford. From March 2007, all babies born in Bradford will be recruited into the cohort.
