The following are documents referred to by Ann Barratt (15 March 2012).

BiB - Starting school briefing for headteachers

BiB - Starting school parent's information sheet

BiB - Starting school protocol - Feb 2012

BiB - Starting school teacher's information sheet

Ian Beesley’s photographs show some key moments in the development of children in the study - from a scan of a baby in the womb in 2007, to a grinning 4 year old in a school sweatshirt in September 2011. This represents the journey of the oldest 813 Born in Bradford children starting in Reception classes in schools across Bradford in September 2011.

Here are the figures for the whole cohort and their entry into Reception classes:

Academic Year Number of BiB children eligible to start in a Reception class during that year
2011/2012 813
2012/2013 3658
2013/2014 3648
2014/2015 3568
2015/2016 1834

The map below shows the density of recruitment to the project by mother’s postcode at the time they were recruited. The map will give you an idea of how many BiB children you can expect to have in your class if they attend schools local to their home.

Born in Bradford is working with the Institute for Effective Education at York University and the Institute of Psychological Sciences at Leeds to follow the children’s educational progress, their psychological well-being and the development of fine motor skills. Researchers will be working with all the children in a class, not just those recruited into the BiB study. In 2012 we will begin pilot studies in reception classes around the city.

More details to follow!
